Gotta Give It Up

I think this song came from an urge to write something more like rock-and-roll. It didn’t really come out that way, but that’s where it started.

I wrote the lyrics first, and then sat down and came up with the chords and melody. The lyrics are about feeling like there’s something you do or think about that maybe isn’t so great for you, something that perhaps you should leave behind, but it’s not so easy to do. I tried to make the music match the tone of the lyrics. Does it work?

This is another song that was really too high for me to sing. So I changed the key from F#m to Em, and I can sort of hit the high notes…

And here are the chords and lyrics:

Gotta Give it Up

It’s the sweetest candy but it makes me sick          Em   D
It’s fine and dandy but it packs a kick                      Em   D
It’s the way to heaven but it leads to hell                  Em   G   A
It’s like rolling a seven but it’s a wicked spell            G    A   Em

It’s a fine addiction but it’s my affliction                     G   Bm
It’s the final answer to the final question                     Em   A
It’s the cherry pie on top of the cake                           G   Bm
It’s the final choice you know you gotta make             Em   A

And I gotta give it up                                                    Em
Gotta give it up                                                             G
Gotta give it up                                                             A
But it’s awful hard                                                         Em
I gotta give it up                                                            Em
Gotta give it up                                                             G
Gotta give it up                                                             A
But it’s so damn hard                                                    Em

She’s the sweetest juice but you know I’d pay
She’s fast and loose until the break of day
She’s the breath of air that is making me blind
She’s everywhere and she’s inside my mind

It’s a fine addiction but it’s my affliction
It’s the final answer to the final question
It’s the cherry pie on top of the cake
It’s the final choice you know you gotta make

And I gotta give it up
Gotta give it up
Gotta give it up
But it’s awful hard
I gotta give it up
Gotta give it up
Gotta give it up
But it’s so damn hard

The One Who Danced Away

I wrote this song on my ukulele. It started with the opening chord progression, which begins with a Bm and has a descending bass line leading to an E7 chord. I like the way the E7 goes to D before resolving to A and then Bm.

The chord progression and melody seemed to call for some sweet and slightly wistful lyrics, so that’s where I went with it.

When I recorded this with Dale Price at Electric Canyon Studios, I was trying to sing a certain phrase in the outro, but I wasn’t hitting the high note very well, so we substituted a different phrase. If you listen to the end, you can hear how it slows down a bit too much… but it’s fine for a demo.

Here’s the song on Bandcamp:

And here are the lyrics and chords:

The One Who Danced Away

I was just a young man when I first saw your face         Bm     BmM7    Bm7    E7
And the memory you know it still leaves a trace            Bm     BmM7    Bm7    E7
I was so grateful to receive that gift of grace                 Bm     BmM7    Bm7    E7
But you were the one who danced away                        D        A      Bm

I looked into your eyes and I knew right away
That I would give you all of my heart without delay
It didn’t matter that I had nothing to say
But you were the one who danced away

You danced away, you danced away                       E        Bm

You saw me, you gave me that magic smile                           Bm    G    D   F#
You touched me, you gave me your sweetness for a while     Bm   G     F#   F#7
It was just a short time but I still feel it today                           Bm    G    D   F#
‘Cause the love you gave to me will never go away                Bm   G     F#   F#7

You took me to the dance and we moved ‘cross the floor
I held you close to me and I felt my feelings soar
And suddenly I knew just what my heart was for
But you were the one who danced away

Many years have passed and I have grown to be a man
And looking back now I begin to understand
What a lucky boy I was when you held my hand
And you were the one who danced away

You danced away, you danced away

You saw me, you gave me that magic smile
You touched me, you gave me your sweetness for a while
It was just a short time but I still feel it today
‘Cause the love you gave to me will never fade away

Sitting By the Creek

I wrote this song one day when I was sitting by the creek, actually out in the middle of the creek perched on a pile of sticks and debris. I wrote it on the ukulele in the key of C, but it was pitched too high for me, so I play it in the key of G, which means I can hit most of the notes. It also means that when I play it on the guitar in G, I’m using the same chord shapes that I enjoyed playing on the ukulele in C.

I like the chord progression in this song. It’s a bit of a departure from the more standard and simple chord progressions I usually use. The four lines of the verse go like this:

G  B7  C  D7
G  B7  Em  G7
C  B7  Em  Cm
G  D7  G

I like the way the first three lines lead up to that Cm. It took me a while to figure out what chord I was hearing there, and I was happy when I found it.

In the lyrics, I’m trying to express how I feel sometimes when I’m there by the creek in Bidwell Park. It’s a good place to be.

I put the song on Bandcamp. You can just play the song, or you can download it for free. Here is the link:

And here are the lyrics and chords to the song:

Sitting By the Creek

Sitting by the creek today I felt my spirits rise                       G  B7  C  D7
Sitting by the creek I let the sun open up my eyes                 G  B7  Em  G7
Sitting by the creek I finally saw through my disguise          C   B7  Em  Cm
Sitting by the creek I fell in love                                                 G   D7  G

Diving in the creek today I felt the water flow
Diving in the creek you know I let all my worries go
Diving in the creek I finally forgot everything I know
Diving in the creek I fell in love

I fell in love today and I’m here to say                                 C   B7
There ain’t no way I’ll forget it                                              Em   G7
I fell in love it’s true with all of you                                       C    B7
And it wouldn’t do to regret it                                                Em    Cm
Sitting by the creek I fell in love                                            G   D7   G

Sitting by the creek today I heard the singing stream
Sitting by the creek I knew it was way more than it seemed
Sitting by the creek I finally woke up from the dream
Sitting by the creek I fell in love

Standing in the sun today the breeze was on my face
Standing in the sun I knew I could finally give up the chase
Standing in the sun I was feeling all of that amazing grace
Standing in the sun I fell in love

I fell in love today and I’m here to say
There ain’t no way I’ll forget it
I fell in love it’s true with all of you
And it wouldn’t do to regret it
Sitting by the creek I fell in love
