Awakening

The idea for this song and some of the lyrics came to me while I was riding my bike one day. It plays with “awakening” in three senses of the word: awakening from sleep in the morning, the awakening of nature in springtime, and the societal awakening that I feel is happening in our time. We’re realizing that our present “civilization” isn’t good for people or the planet, and we’re responding with astounding creative energy, inventing new ways of life, and reclaiming traditional ways as well, learning how to build a world of peace and plenty for all. We’re recognizing that much of our trouble comes from believing what we think, and we’re learning to integrate the wonderful powers of the mind into a larger consciousness. I believe we’re beginning to transform our world into a much more beautiful place.

We may call it a spiritual awakening, and that’s what I think is happening. I wrote a book about this, and have just published it as an ebook. It’s called Stage 3: A Vision of Human Evolution, and it’s on a great do-it-yourself ebook publishing site called Smashwords. If you’re interested, the book is available as a free download. And here’s the song I wrote. Hope you enjoy it. I’d love to hear any thoughts you might have!

Awakening

The morning light is growing                         D
The birds are getting going                            A6
It sounds like they’re making it up                 Bm
And we are waking it up                                 G

Nighttime fears fade into day
Bad dreams have gone away
Sunshine’s lighting up our eyes
Feel that kundalini rise

It’s happening                                                 D
We are awakening                                          A
You know it’s happening                                Bm
We are awakening                                          G

Blossoms in the almond trees
Release their scent into the breeze
Seeds are sprouting in the earth
Another spring is taking birth

Sun peeks through the clouds above
And all our fancies turn to love
Ice is melting, creeks are flowing
We’re feeling all the new life growing

It’s happening
We are awakening
You know it’s happening
We are awakening

All across the country
All across the planet
Everywhere you look
It’s shining in our eyes

It’s time to leave the fear behind us
Time to let the bad dreams cease
Time to let our love run free
Time to live a life of peace

It’s happening
We are awakening
You know it’s happening
We are awakening

The Milk of Human Kindness

This song started with the “hook” – the line “I’m drunk on the milk of human kindness.” I was thinking about how almost everyone I run into is friendly and kind-hearted, and the line popped into my head. Perhaps it’s a bit of a cliché, but lots of songs use well-worn sayings for the hook, right? And I like the sound of the line, especially the repetition of the “k” sound in “drunk” and “milk.”

So I just wrote the lyrics around the hook, and it flowed out pretty easily. I didn’t really plan it this way, but I like the progression from the first two verses, where I’m out wandering around, to the last verse, where I’m coming home to my ever-loving sweetheart in our geodesic dome. This one’s for you, Theresa!

It’s a very simple tune, using the same simple chord progression in the verse and the chorus. It’s nice to have a few songs like that; for one thing, it makes it easy for other musicians to play along. And it sure is fun to play songs with other people…

Here’s wishing you plenty of the milk of human kindness!

The Milk of Human Kindness

I was walking on a cold and lonely evening             G       C
And I made it to the house of good cheer                G       D
A roomful of friendly faces turned to greet me         G       G7     C     C7
And the barman offered me a beer                           G       D      G

I said no, thanks, ‘cause…

I’m drunk on the milk of human kindness                G       C
I’m high on the perfume of delight                           G       D
I’m under the influence of the love you give to me    G      G7    C    C7
And I don’t plan to sober up tonight                           G       D      G

I was wandering on a path through the forest
And I came to the meadow of happy folk
There were hobbit children dancing, and elf-maids singing,
And a kind wizard offered me a toke

I said no, thanks, ‘cause…

I’m drunk on the milk of human kindness
I’m high on the perfume of delight
I’m under the influence of the love you give to me
And I don’t plan to sober up tonight

I went biking down the streets of my hometown
And I came back to our geodesic dome
My ever-loving sweetheart took me in her arms
Asked me how does it feel to be home

I said well, darling…

I’m drunk on the milk of human kindness
I’m high on the perfume of delight
I’m under the influence of the love you give to me
And I don’t plan to sober up tonight

I’m under the influence of the love you give to me
And I don’t plan to sober up tonight
