The Milk of Human Kindness

This song started with the “hook” – the line “I’m drunk on the milk of human kindness.” I was thinking about how almost everyone I run into is friendly and kind-hearted, and the line popped into my head. Perhaps it’s a bit of a cliché, but lots of songs use well-worn sayings for the hook, right? And I like the sound of the line, especially the repetition of the “k” sound in “drunk” and “milk.”

So I just wrote the lyrics around the hook, and it flowed out pretty easily. I didn’t really plan it this way, but I like the progression from the first two verses, where I’m out wandering around, to the last verse, where I’m coming home to my ever-loving sweetheart in our geodesic dome. This one’s for you, Theresa!

It’s a very simple tune, using the same simple chord progression in the verse and the chorus. It’s nice to have a few songs like that; for one thing, it makes it easy for other musicians to play along. And it sure is fun to play songs with other people…

Here’s wishing you plenty of the milk of human kindness!

The Milk of Human Kindness

I was walking on a cold and lonely evening             G       C
And I made it to the house of good cheer                G       D
A roomful of friendly faces turned to greet me         G       G7     C     C7
And the barman offered me a beer                           G       D      G

I said no, thanks, ‘cause…

I’m drunk on the milk of human kindness                G       C
I’m high on the perfume of delight                           G       D
I’m under the influence of the love you give to me    G      G7    C    C7
And I don’t plan to sober up tonight                           G       D      G

I was wandering on a path through the forest
And I came to the meadow of happy folk
There were hobbit children dancing, and elf-maids singing,
And a kind wizard offered me a toke

I said no, thanks, ‘cause…

I’m drunk on the milk of human kindness
I’m high on the perfume of delight
I’m under the influence of the love you give to me
And I don’t plan to sober up tonight

I went biking down the streets of my hometown
And I came back to our geodesic dome
My ever-loving sweetheart took me in her arms
Asked me how does it feel to be home

I said well, darling…

I’m drunk on the milk of human kindness
I’m high on the perfume of delight
I’m under the influence of the love you give to me
And I don’t plan to sober up tonight

I’m under the influence of the love you give to me
And I don’t plan to sober up tonight
